Define_luminaires-v19-v20_Comparison
The Define luminaire experience was redesigned for AGi32 version 20 to be more intuitive, powerful and precise. The version 20 dialog appearance is very different and may throw seasoned version 19 (and earlier) users on first inspection. Rest assured, it is much improved and you will understand our intentions after a little experimentation.
- Select button changed to Browse/Recent button and redesigned.
- Collections have been redesigned
- Added Import button, this allows you to select and import luminaire definitions from an AGi32 file.
- Instabase menu reorganized (see above).
- Downloaded moved to Instabase menu.
- Audit moved to Instabase menu.
- Find function removed (use Browse/Recent instead).
- Smart Symbols switch moved to System Settings-Define Luminaire.
- Auto Define functionality has been replaced with Auto-Apply.
- Added Apply (shown gray, only appears when valid, everything is now Auto-Apply when focus exits current field)
- Added Settings button (only displays settings for Define Luminaire).
- Replaced Close button with Ok and Cancel - Ok commits changes, Cancel rolls back changes.
- The list of defined luminaires is now presented in a fully editable Grid (click in the cell to edit).
- The fields you place in your grid are customizable from the Settings area and will remain that way until changed or reset.
- When a luminaire is selected in the grid it's familiar components are shown on the right side of the dialog in an area we call Panels. Depending on the size of your monitor the dialog can be configured to display this information differently in the Settings area: All panels visible, tabs, scrolling.
- When a luminaire or multiple luminaires are selected in the grid (shift or Ctrl-click for multiple) the right click menu is available allowing modifications to be made to all luminaires elected (some functions). There is new functionality here.
- Label, Tag and Description defaults have been moved to Settings.
- Various Attributes can now be assigned to a definition. They can be custom, pulled from Instabase, or selected from factory provided (see Attributes topic).
- Substitute a different IES file for any definition.
- Luminous Box and Photometric Center locations now more detailed and easier to modify (see Luminous Box topic)
- View raw IES file.
- Check out new Symbols dialog.
- Collections totally remodeled.
The location of photometric center has changed from AGi32 version 19 and earlier to version 20 and forward. This has minor implications that should be understood when moving job files between versions. Please reference our Knowledgebase article on this topic and the information below.
Using AGi32 version 19 (and earlier) the location of Photometric Center (where the photometric file is placed in X,Y,Z space) was slightly different when using Direct versus Full calculation modes as described below. This could result in small differences between the calculation mode results assuming zero reflectance in Full mode.
-
Using Full Radiosity Method - Photometric Center is center of Luminous Box
-
Using Direct Calculation Method - Photometric Center was at the symbol Insertion Point which is generally NOT the center of the luminous box
Using version 20 and forward, the photometric center position will be at the center of the luminous box in both calculation modes UNLESS you modify it in the symbols or Luminous Box sections of Luminaire Define process. This will produce better correlation between the two calculation methods (assuming zero reflectances).
-
Photometric Center for Direct Calculations (above)
-
Photometric Webs are located at photometric center in v20. They were at symbol insertion point in v19 and earlier.
-
Templates which will yield slightly different results due to location of photometric center. Version 20 is more accurate.
-
In general, Full Calculation mode results will show minimal differences
-
Location of photometric center will affect photometric web emanating location
-
Location of photometric center will affect template
-
Many version 20 features are not supported in earlier versions.
-
Photometric center offsets used in v20 files will revert to center of luminous box in Full mode and symbol insertion in Direct mode.
-
Luminous Box offset used in v20 files will revert to center of luminous box in Full mode and symbol insertion in Direct mode.
-
Attributes are not supported and will be lost
-
Split scheduling of aiming points will be lost
-
Scheduling of Photometric center will be lost
-
Enhanced luminaire Labels will be lost
-
Label and Tag fields in v20 are now 255 characters. Description and TAG can consist of multiple lines. You may lose data opening v20 files in older versions.

-
V20 maintains symbols definitions for both V19 (and earlier) and V20 to facilitate moving between versions without totally loosing symbol definitions
